EXPERIENCES

Dr. Michael W. McConnell D.D.S. Internship

I completed a 72-hour internship at Dr. Michael W. McConnell D.D.S. At Dr. McConnell’s office, I filed, work at the reception desk, cut and make retainers, cleaned utensils, cleaned up after each appointment, unloaded supplies, and helped with the patients and brought them back to the rooms to get situated. I was able to observe the patients’ teeth and gums and what their situation was and what proper solution and treatment would be taken to solve the issue. This also taught me to improve my social skills as I greeted patients and conversed with them. I observed root canals, fillings, crown fittings, application and removal of braces, dentures/ denture snaps, and partials put on being performed. I learned what different instruments are used for.  I participated in completing an internship at a dentist office because it is my goal to become a dental hygienist and this experience helped me practice what I knew in dentistry and further my knowledge of what my daily tasks  would be so that I can be a successful  in the future. Traveling to China!

Confucius Institution and Liaoning Normal University in Dalian, China held a Chinese program for American and Italian students to travel across the world and attend classes to exercise their Chinese speaking and learn about Chinese culture. This program was funded by the Chinese government to allow students to experience different cultures and study abroad. Every day for 15 days, I attended three culture classes which included how to paint Chinese traditional paintings, Chinese martial arts, Chinese calligraphy, dough modeling, and traditional paper cutting. After our three culture classes for the day, we attended our Chinese language class. There were three classes based on student’s level of Chinese: Beginners, Intermediate, and Advance. I was put in Advance. During each class, the teacher only spoke Chinese. She knew very little English, so it was difficult to follow along on some topics. During our Chinese Language Class, we learned about different food, how to order, directions, sports, and math/algebra terms. Sightseeing was also another part of our daily routine. We toured Dalian, history museums, science museums, and festivals, the Great Wall of China, Tiananmen Square, Olympic park, Temple of Heaven, and the Summer Palace. We also shopped every day so that we could practice ordering and speaking in Chinese to become fluent. Each day was an opportunity to experience and learn the Chinese culture socially, economically, and academically.

Early Morning Seminary

Seminary is an hour class in the morning at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where students are taught gospel principles, church history, and the meaning of stories in the scriptures. We read and learn what verses mean in each chapter, and read all five books that LDS members believe in which are: The Book of Mormon, The New Testament, The Old Testament, Doctrine and Covenants, and The Pearl of Great Price. Every year, there are 25 scripture masteries which are 1-5 verse long scripture passages that we have to remember every year in order to Letter in Seminary. These scripture masteries are important verses from each book that help us learn morals, deal with different challenges, etc.  At the end of each semester, we take a semester test that shows how much we have learned. Students must pass the tests and have more than an 80% attendance in order to pass the course for that year. I have attended seminary for four years and each year, I passed with more than an 80% attendance and passed all my semester tests.  Each year, a senior is chosen with amazing scores and high attendance, to be the next president of seminary. The president must be there early, take attendance, assign people to opening routines such as opening prayer and devotional, and exemplify high moral characteristics and be a leader. Each day was tough as I would have to wake up at five in the morning after having to go to bed late the previous night due to finishing homework, but I still managed to know that going to seminary would organize my day and portrays hard work and sacrifice to choose classes over sleep and that is why I participated in seminary every day.

Mai Maids' Secretary

Mai Maids are a young women group of 14-15 year-olds that are active and apart of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In this group, young women learn who they really are, their self-worth, how to deal with worldly problems, and how to be witness of God and example of others. A presidency, which included the president, first and second counselor, and a secretary, is called to facilitate each event, activity, and meeting to help improve and strengthen the girls in the groups. As a secretary, I write the meeting agenda, notes, and plan activities. I participated in this activity so that I could use the leadership skills that I already developed into practice and continue growing and learning more skills that will be beneficial in the future. During this experience, I learned that as a leader, I am responsible for the people I am in charge of. I am supposed to support, help them, and guide them because that is what leaders do.

Laurels' First Counselor

Laurels is group of young women ages 16-18 years of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In this group, young women continue to practice learning what they learned in Mai Maids and prepare to enter into the temple, prepare for temple marriage and college, learn financial tips, and how to survive and be successful in the future. As the Laurel’s first counselor, I reach out to inactive girls and try to convince them to come back to church, plan and organize meetings, and take place of the absent president during group meetings. I participated in this activity because in my church, you are “called” to a position, which means the council chooses you because you demonstrate the skills and abilities required for that position. I chose to accept this calling as the first counselor because I wanted to continue to practice leadership skills, help conduct meetings, and guide the young women in the church. I learned that no matter what age you are, you can become a leader and when you be that example of a leader, others start to want to follow you and become their own leader and learn to be independent.
